The Supreme Court handed down the much anticipated ruling on the Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as Obamacare, on Thursday – and media scrambled to translate the complicated brief. But the judgment on the President’s signature law resulted in early coverage from CNN and Fox News reporting that the individual mandate had been struck down, when in fact it was upheld as a tax. How did journalists get it so wrong?
As the confusion unfolded on air, Fox News anchors Megyn Kelly and Judge Andrew Napolitano turned to SCOTUSblog.com for clarification. The blog was the first media outlet to accurately report the ruling and the blog’s live feed of the SCOTUS ruling peaked at over 800,000 views. SCOTUSblog.com creator Tom Goldstein discusses the reporting that went on behind the scenes.
Radio host Michael Medved, Bloomberg columnist Margaret Carlson and University of Maryland journalism professor Mark Feldstein will discuss how other media outlets covered the ruling as well as how pundits have been predicting that the mandate would be thrown out for months now.
Gail Shister of TV Newser discusses how NBC handled the exit of Today show co-host Ann Curry, as well as her emotional goodbye Thursday.
The debate over the modern working woman’s ability to find work-life balance has been going on for decades. But the cover story for July’s issue of The Atlantic entitled Why Women Can’t Have It All, by former State Department official Anne-Marie Slaughter, brought the debate back to the forefront. Editor-in-chief for the Daily-Download.com Lauren Ashburn and Newsweek/Daily Beast correspondent Michelle Cottle discuss why the article’s gotten so much attention.
