The Supreme Court handed down the much anticipated ruling on the Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as Obamacare, on Thursday – and media scrambled to translate the complicated brief. But the judgment on the President’s signature law resulted in early coverage from CNN and Fox News reporting that the individual mandate had been struck down, when in fact it was upheld as a tax. How did journalists get it so wrong?

As the confusion unfolded on air, Fox News anchors Megyn Kelly and Judge Andrew Napolitano turned to SCOTUSblog.com for clarification. The blog was the first media outlet to accurately report the ruling and the blog’s live feed of the SCOTUS ruling peaked at over 800,000 views.
