Howard’s in Los Angeles! And now the burning question in Washington this week has been answered: Mitt Romney picks Paul Ryan as his running mate. Was the media "veepstakes" coverage too much? From predictions to post-announcement analysis, has the speculation gotten out of control? We’ll have Current TV’s Stephanie Miller, Republican strategist Dan Schnur, and Los Angeles Times reporter Robin Abcarian along with Ben Smith from BuzzFeed and Terence Smith, formerly of the PBS NewsHour, to talk veepstakes and what comes next.
This year’s Summer Olympic Games have been heralded as the “Games of Girls” with more female athletes than ever before. But some like American hurdler Lolo Jones and gymnast Gabby Douglas have been under the media spotlight more than others. Jones, like some other women in the Olympics, has been painted as sex symbol and was recently the subject of a critical story in the New York Times, to which she blamed the media for not doing their research. Was the story unfair? And have the media portrayed the female athletes as sex symbols? We’ll talk to USA Today sports columnist Christine Brennan.

The very next time I read a blog, Hopefully it won't fail me as much as this particular one. Christine Brennan is either disingenuous or deluded if she believes NBC's coverage of the Olympics is unbiased. Grab a DVD and observe, Howard. I can only ascribe your agreeing with her to your being a gentleman... You are usually more balanced and objective.
Ms. Brennan portrayal of the U.S. media as a model of objectivity and detachment in Olympic coverage is nonsense. NBC and others openly gush about US athletes and often cover them extensively when they aren't even part of the group of major contenders in their discipline; the endless human interest stories we are being fed are also an important tool in building support for the US Olympic team.
Media from every country all do the same, to various degrees; many are more restrained than the U.S., others veer into the absurd (like North Korea)
Why not say that it was Fox News that attacked Gabby Douglas's hair? When you go after MSNBC, you sure are not shy about singling them out – why are you so intimidated by Fox News?
Ms. Brennan was most disingenuous in her claims on your show, claims which you let pass without questioning them. She claimed that the US journalists such as herself didn't root for anyone, but she herself rotted and hard for one gender, women. Her thus claimed 'objectivity' is shown by that position of hers to be quite... mythical. Physician, heal thyself...
I watch every week, and this is the best Sunday morning news show hands down. My only complaint is that the print for guest names that appears on the screen is too small and fleeting in time.

As a Reagan conservative, I've always enjoyed your show and column. Surely at your core, you are a liberal; however, like the late great Tim Russert (at one time a senior advisor to Mario Cuomo), you usually seem to subordinate your ideology for the higher good: objectivity.
I watched your show today and was deeply disappointed. Over the top hyper-lib Stephanie Miller and the sane and thoughtful Dan Schnur should never be presented as equals in a segment. The former is deeply partisan and seemingly unhinged; the latter professorial.
Please remember there are those of us on the right who enjoy your show because you seem to attempt to be objective.
oh Howie...let's see. YES Ryan has a 'plan' for medicare and social security. BUT SO DOES OBAMA. I know it's lazy journalism to pretend that Ryan will 'push' the debate but honest to GOD. You let them on your program to rail against the '$700 billion cut to medicare' but don't acknowledge that this is part of the President's plan to REFORM medicare. Instead, because the bats#$% crazy Ryan put a 'plan' out that had no chance of becoming law and the President MADE the cuts, one has a plan and the other doesn't.
