There never would have been a story about the dead girlfriend who didn't exist if the reporters had done basic reporting. Reporters did not get duped. They failed to do basic reporting. This is a feature story. To write a feature story, you need details. So anyone writing this feature story would get the accident report, pictures from the accident report, the obit. And finding none, any reporter would instantly know there's a major problem. How many managing editors got fired for approving this story? What specific corrective actions have all the news organizations taken that did copy and paste instead of actual reporting? Come on! Do some reporting! The reason you see college athletic scandal after college athletic scandal is because the local press doesn't report; it waves the pom poms. There would not have been a steroid era in baseball if the baseball writers had done the story staring them in the face. They didn't. They played cheerleader. At the college level, sports reporters don't even control their own interviews. The sports information director determines who will be available, and sports reporter after sports reporter goes along with it. Using the term reporter for such people is an insult to the word.
