Stephen Colbert to succeed David Letterman as host of "The Late Show"

By Brian Stelter, CNN Senior Media Correspondent

(CNN) - Stephen Colbert will succeed David Letterman as the host of "The Late Show," CBS announced on Thursday, one week after Letterman told his audience that he would retire sometime in 2015.

CBS said Colbert had signed a five-year contract to host the iconic late-night broadcast.

Colbert, 49, has been the host of Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report" since 2005.

If the conservative right wing is so concerned about Stephen Colbert taking over the Tonight Show time slot with a presumed "Liberal bias" then let Fox air their own late night show. Oh ya, comedy isn't exactly their strong suit.

#stephen colbert. i am so disappointed about your discussion of stephen colbert and his taking over the dave letterman show.

the real issue is how there is hidden agenda with almost all of television now. you are reviewing fox news and the conservative person and their thoughts about stephen colbert. you are missing the point. these "sources" are just as direct with their agenda and political views. both fox news and that conservative commentator do not hide their conservative values. this conversation about stephen colbert IS HYPOCRITICAL. IT IS LIKE THE POT CALLING THE KETTLE BLACK.

your conversation should be about how television as become more and more partisan. it is rare to find any television that does not have some direction.

Guess that's the last time I'll ever watch late night again. Should have been Conan.
