Look at the federal tax code. There have been many news reports on the tax code since the 1986 reforms and everyone knows that the code has been repeatedly corrupted by lobbyists. But the voters have never done anything to stop Congress from creating at least one new tax deduction for every special interest group with enough money for many large campaign contributions. Now, elitists like Chuck and Brian can provide wonderful explanations for why Congress is not doing its job correctly. But they don't want to talk about how they have failed. They don't want to acknowledge that the tax code scandal is a wonderful example of their failure. And they won't change their behavior until the government forces them. .
