In an interview with Brian Stelter, documentary filmmaker Marshall Curry analyzes the slickly-produced videos uploaded to the Internet by the Islamic extremist group ISIS.
They're using propaganda to bait us into sending our soldiers back into war. They want us to use all our resources, to even bankrupt us in the effort. It's like swatting bees. If we continue to swat, more bees will come. If we use our heads, watch and plan in a strategic way- they won't have their biggest weapon to use against us. That weapon is their use of propaganda to convince the young and zealous to come to join them. We can no longer allow our lack of reason to build a modern day Crusade. We can't win a religious war, nor should we want to do that. Christ didn't teach us to convert or kill. These are radical terrorists that use religious zeal to attract their recruits. We don't want to provide them their "proof" that they are the ones that are really under attack, while at the same time draining our resources so that we are too weak to defend ourselves. What really happened to the USSR when they tried to win their war in Afghanistan? Didn't we support bin Laden at that time? There must be a smarter way to take out the radical terrorist "bees" while building trust and friendship with the people of the middle east that don't want war.
Now more than ever, the press is a part of every story it covers. And CNN's "Reliable Sources" is one of television's only regular programs to examine how journalists do their jobs and how the media affect the stories they cover.
Brian Stelter is the host of "Reliable Sources" and the senior media correspondent for CNN Worldwide. Before he joined CNN in November 2013, Stelter was a media reporter for The New York Times. He is the author of the New York Times best-seller "Top of the Morning."
