Brian Williams is under severe scrutiny for exaggerating his experience on an Iraq War mission in 2003. Now he's taking a leave of absence. Will he ever be able to return to "NBC Nightly News?" As the question is being openly asked inside NBC, Kimberly Dozier, Jeff Greenfield, and Frank Sesno all weigh in.
Sesno and Greenfield also comment on whether this speaks to a more systemic problem at NBC News.
In their first television interviews, Brian Stelter speaks with both a pilot of Brian Williams' helicopter in Iraq and a pilot of the chopper that was actually hit by an RPG.
Questions are also being raised about Williams' Katrina stories. Is it fair? Lt. Gen. Russell Honoré, who directed humanitarian relief after the hurricane, has his share of questions.

Regardless...all journalists lie at one time or another. And many are told to by their network superiors. So if one is going to be punished so should they all. I suspect they are trying to get rid of him because its the financial feasable thing to do.

And @ banasy i agree, if in fact he did lie than yea he deserves some punishment. However....when will ALL the other lying journalists be punished? And that list is awfully long! And i mean an extremely long list!
Yeah, he was caught lying about his Iraqi experiences years later by the very Iraqi veterans who were there at the time of his supposed experience.
If another anchor (note I said anchor and not the host of an entertainment show; there is a difference) gets caught in a blatant lie by the folks who were there at the time, I'd fully expect them to be punished, also.
Hannity can lie his fool ass off (and he does), but he's classified as an entertainer, and not a need anchor/journalist, so his patent BS is given a pass, because his show is entertainment, not news.

And spot on @ Jim Woodworth! That was the most important reason i liked watching Brian Williams news show...because he wasnt biased! He didnt lean to the left nor to the right. And THAT is pretty hard to find in a journalist! In fact its pretty much impossible! And i think Fox/faux news totally sux!
I think you may have misunderstood something i said @ banasy. I dont believe he should be paid while on suspension. Just as i dont believe police officers should be paid while they are on suspension either. But i do think there is a clause in those contracts about that very thing that allows them to be broken. Also we DONT know if he did or didnt lie nor when that lie may have taken place. We only know what the NBC network has said which also could be a lie! They arent known for their truthful behavior either! I just think its pure rotten for them to do their best to ruin his career which up til now has been considered steller! And its wrong to punish (convict) him until its been proved.
Yes, we do know. He did it on air. And he was busted by the people who were with him at the time of the experience.
He is ultimately responsible for his own behavior. NBC isn't trying to ruin their #1 need anchor's reputation; why do that? He did that all by himself.
He has stated he felt he put himself too much in the news. Yes, he did. And no one is sorrier than the people who trusted him in the first place.
My comment is that I feel that there is a double standard being applied here. Some of the major Cable news channels anchors spend most of the time spinning miss truths and opinions about people and events and journalism as a industry does not crucify them. The Fox news, Political PAC, and religious zealots spout miss-truths and outright lies and they are not pulled off the air and suspended..
On the other hand this might be the wakeup call to the industry that the people just DO NOT TRUST THE BS THAT IS SPOUTED ON THE NEWS ANYMORE. Why you ask? Because the industry has let the standard of Journalism go TO THE TOILET and let the Fox News, MSNBC etc get away with crappy journalism. I sure wish that the News Paper industry was still strong. There it was black and white and people were to an extent held accountable. IMHO
Part of the problem is even though there may be "news" right there in the name of the network, the majority of the shows are classified as "entertainment", and have been given the right to use that as an excuse to lie. In that case, it's always kind if a "well, believe at your own risk, this show is entertainment and was never meant to be taken as gospel."
And those networks have won the right to do so.
It's complete and total BS.
Print still has enough integrity to print retractions (even if it's buried somewhere), and actively try to be as honest as possible.
With the proliferation of online "news" sources, journalistic integrity has taken a backseat to click-bait and who breaks what story first. And almost NEVER correct the misinformation they post in their hurry to be first. (Gawker is great for this tactic, among others. Not that I've ever taken Gawker seriously.)
It's a complete mess.
Ok guess we are on opposite sides of the fence on this and thats ok i still love ya! But..life is full of disappointments! And i cant imagine those criminalizing him over this havent lied theirselves. Probably a great many times. And if he is suspended WITHOUT pay he can get out of those contracts! If he were being paid that would be a whole different story! And there isnt a journalist alive that tells the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth!
He can't just quit, Chrissy. That is the purpose of contracts. Actions have consequences.
He should not be *rewarded* for his behavior, either. Take the punishment like an adult. By all indications, he is.
He's not being charged with any criminal actions; therefore there isn't any "criminalizing his actions" occurring.
The issue isn't whether he lied about his experiences in Iraq ten years later; when he reported on it initially, he didn't lie about it. It's why he lied about it now in the re-telling of his experiences in Iraq – and if he has lied about other first-hand experiences he has reported on, such as Katrina.
His credibility is at stake. And rightly so.
I don't dislike Brian Williams, per se; I'm sure he's quite the likable fellow. He should have stuck with reporting the news instead of embellishing his experiences for whatever reasons. If he wanted to be an entertainer, he should have pursued a different career.
Perhaps he still can. There's always room for another talk show; based on his credentials, he could probably get one pretty easily.
I guess that we will have to agree to disagree on this, Chrissy; if we get so used to everyone lying that we give everyone who does so a pass, we deserve to get the crappy, biased coverage we currently get.
Im sure another network will pick him up @ banasy! The only reason i ever watch NBC news is to watch him anyway! And he totally rocks when hes on Jimmy Fallon!
He's still under the contract he signed in December, Chrissy. Although you may like him greatly, his credibility took a hit, and a lot of people who compared him to Walter Cronkite and Peter Jennings are very disappointed.
Exactly @ Bill...but if one comes clean as Brian Williams has done, all hell breaks lose! And another example we have a boatload of lying politicians and NOTHING ever comes of THEIR repeated lying! Not to mention the work ethics they have, or in Congresses case DONT have!!!
How about the totally accepted practice of the media exaggerating the quantities of disaster events as in " the storm tore roofs off schools and toppled 18 wheelers" ( reality is one of esch) . This is very common but nobody gets in trouble for doing it!
I for one hope he does return to the nightly news. I like him and i think we would be hard pressed to find ONE journalist who hasnt lied at one time or another!
NBC suspended him for 6 months without pay, Chrissy; 6 months may as well be eternity for the short attention spanned folks these days. This may kill his career.
And my personal opinion....they ought to just leave Bruce Jenner alone! Its not newsworthy for one thing and for another what the hell would you expect after living all those years with all things kardashian? Good grief, thats a nightmare in itself.
